Chapter 17

Her mind still agog with all the information from Dezy, Doreen wandered to Nan’s later that afternoon.

When Nan saw her granddaughter, Nan jumped up. “You found out something,” she cried out in delight.

Doreen slowly shook her head. “Nothing concrete. Matter of fact, nothing even close yet.”

“Ah, but you’re on it.” Nan gave a nod of quiet satisfaction. “I knew you would.”

Doreen laughed. “You might know I would, but I wasn’t so sure. I’m still not.”

“Of course not, it takes time. You need that wonderful brain of yours to tell you something.”

Doreen frowned. “You think I just ask my brain,” she asked with curiosity, “and the answers come?”

“As much as I wish it were that easy, I’m sure it’s not. You need to let things run around in your head for a while, don’t you?”

“I do,” Doreen agreed. “That’s not necessarily a problem.”

“No, of course not,” Nan concurred. “Not sure it’s all that great a solution though either.”

“Maybe not.” Doreen considered it for a long time, as she sat here.

Finally Nan asked, “You want to share?”

Doreen gave her head a shake. “No, I can’t do that now.” Then she smiled at her. “I did talk to Dezy though.”

Nan stared at her in surprise for a moment at the conversation shift and then asked, “Oh my, how is he?”

“He’s a character, and he’s doing fine,” she replied. “He’s a very surprising person. And I think a good-hearted one too.”

“Oh?”

“I think he’s happiest at the cemetery, talking to people both alive and dead. … I think he’s lonely,” Doreen added.

“When we get older, we can only do so much before people think that we have no value. It’s one of the reasons that we all appreciate you so much because you appreciate us.”

And those were such sad words that Doreen could only stare at her Nan. “I hope that never changes,” she replied gently. “You have a magnificent brain yourself.”

“Well, I used to, I don’t know that it’s all that great anymore”—Nan chuckled—“but we can always hope.”

“I think you’re doing just fine, and don’t let anybody tell you otherwise.”

Nan smiled at her. “You’re such a sweetheart.”

“I try, but I’m not so sure at times. Sometimes I think I’d be better off if I found something else to do for a hobby.”

“Oh dear, are you having a crisis right now?”

At that term, Doreen burst out laughing. “No, I don’t think so. Just one of those reevaluations about what I’m doing with my life.”

“Right now, you don’t need to do any evaluation because you have cases to deal with.”

Nan wasn’t wrong, yet it wasn’t exactly the easiest thing for Doreen to turn on and off. “No, you’re right there. And a case that has lots of juiciness to it.”

“The guns definitely add to that juiciness.” Nan smiled. “And believe me. Everybody is talking about it.”

“I talked to Jerry, the owner of Big Guy. Took Thaddeus there for a playdate.”

But Thaddeus—having heard his friend’s name—jumped down, bobbing his head back and forth. “Big Guy, Big Guy, Big Guy.
